CMWC Minerals is a specialist group set up specifically to deal with activities related to industrial, ferrous and non-ferrous minerals. The group is integrated within the full range of survey and consultancy services provided by CMWC to the maritime industry and the allied insurance and legal sectors. CMWC Minerals can thus offer complete support for the investigation of incidents and disputes involving the production, storage, transport and trade of minerals on an international basis.

The Minerals Group is led by Michael Anthony who is supported by other specialist technical, engineering and trading consultants who have direct access to analytical and testing facilities at leading laboratories.

Typical Projects

Steel Shipments (South Africa)
A prominent steel export company engaged CMWC to independently review its arrangements for shipping and chartering world-wide. The CMWC report identified areas for substantial efficiency improvement.

Cold Rolled Steel Coil Quality Dispute (India)
CMWC provided a two-man expert team to advise on technical and marketing aspects on a matter concerning a disputed large shipment of cold rolled coils. The matter went to arbitration in India where the expert evidence was given and accepted.

Self-heating of Direct Reduced Iron
Contract research into the root causes of self-heating of Direct Reduced Iron in the light of recurring problems in DRI shipments from CIS ports.

Analysis of Business Interruption of Continuous Process Plant
Following a major incident on a continuous process plant, CMWC was instructed to do a review of standard methodologies for ramp-up business interruption claims and evaluation of business interruption quantum for continuous process plant during start up.

Cargo Liquefaction (World-wide)
Expert assistance was provided in a number incidents concerning bulk solid cargo liquefaction  for commodities containing sulphur and base metal concentrates.    In the light of this experience CMWC was called upon to review shipping procedures.

Cargo Contamination (World-wide)
CMWC has provided technical assistance in contaminated cargo treatment and undertaken forensic analysis of the causes of contamination with support on the commercial front by assisting in disposing off-specification cargoes.

Long Term Storage of Copper Concentrates
CMWC was called upon to advise on the effects of long term storage of copper concentrates following the grounding of, and subsequent length repairs to a bulk carrier.

Potash
CMWC was retained to  inspect a cargo of potash which, on arrival showed evidence of water ingress. CMWC was involved in the loss mitigation and arranged for the material to be treated locally.
